Unravelling Thoughts on Bananas - "Should I Eat This?"

Why did bananas get such a bad rap? When did this nonsense happen? Should you eat the whole banana? Of course, but read below to find out why!

Before we get into it - remember the answer is always* yes! You should eat this food!

*Always being defined as: ALL FOODS (yes every single food item) can and should be enjoyed UNLESS you are allergic, intolerant, or truly do not like the food*⁠

Why are we Going Bananas over Bananas?

Bananas have become the most frequent fruit in question - but why? Going back to the Natural Sugar vs Added Sugar convo, bananas have sugar, but it is all naturally occuring. Like all fruits, this natural sugar comes packed with a bunch of health benefits like, vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Bananas actually have a similar amount of sugar to apples - so why are we all hating on bananas??? They're delicious, portable, inexpensive, taste great with nut/seed butter, and yes you can enjoy a whole banana!

Since fruit has fiber, it helps slow down the digestion process and the absorption of sugar into our blood - allowing for steadier and more consistent blood sugar levels. To slow down the absorption even more, pair your fruit with a source of fat or protein like, seeds, nuts, or cheese. In addition to the nutritional benefits from the fruit, you will also be getting added fat and protein, increasing satiety! It's a win win!

In the Name of Health

In general, bananas have a bunch of health benefits:

  • High in vitamins and minerals: C, B, potassium

  • A good source of fiber

  • Source of quick energy

Bananas also make a great pre/post workout snack! The natural sugar is quick digesting to give you that pre-workout boost, and when paired with nut butter or another fat/protein source, it makes a perfect post-workout snack!

As with most foods, unless you are only eating bananas, everyday, for every meal, everyday of your life - enjoying bananas in a balanced, well-rounded, intuitively driven diet, full of variety (fruits, vegetables, whole grains, protein, and fat), sounds like an awesome choice!

What's the Deal with "Nice"cream?

Nicecream or banana whip is delish, don't get me wrong, but please do not put this in the same category as ice cream! If you want ice cream, you should eat ice cream (probably another post in the "Should I Eat This" series to come...). If you want bananas, you should eat bananas. If you want ice cream, but eat whipped up frozen bananas, you probably will not find the satisfaction factor you are looking for, and end up eating ice cream anyway! Moral of the story - eat bananas and ice cream, but don't eat bananas, if what you want is ice cream.

Should I Eat This?

Yes, of course! Eat the WHOLE banana! (Unless you are allergic, cannot tolerate bananas, or straight up do not like them!) Add bananas to smoothies, make banana bread, use them as a topping for yogurt or oatmeal, or just peel it and eat it! If your bananas are becoming too ripe, don't forget to put them in the freezer before they go bad!!
