Unravelling Thoughts on Pasta - Should I Eat This?
As per usual, there are many “no no’s” to what carbs we include on our plate! One carb that is highly neglected is pasta.
Oh who doesn’t love a warm bowl of pasta! Pasta is probably one of the best things that ever happened to this planet. You can eat it with cheese and sauce or you can put meat on top. I mean pesto...come on! But many people don’t eat pasta because it is deemed “not to be good for you”
So.. should we eat pasta? Let’s unravel this food rule.
Before we get into it - remember the answer is always* yes! You should eat this food!
*Always being defined as: ALL FOODS (yes every single food item) can and should be enjoyed UNLESS you are allergic, intolerant, or truly do not like the food*
Let Me Ask You This...
Has a medical professional ever told you to not eat pasta?
What was their reasoning?
Was it backed by science?
Did you just discover you have celiac disease or were tested for gluten intolerance? (More on that later - there are so many types of pastas now!)
There is really no reason why you shouldn’t include pasta in your meal rotations.
Pasta is cost effective (aka super cheap), stays good for a long time, is easy to store, and has nutrients like iron and fiber.
Many people try to substitute pasta with cauliflower rice or zoodles, (which are also delicious), but if your body is craving pasta, do you really think those pasta im”pasta”ers (see what I did there…) will satisfy your craving? Saying “no” to foods you want and enjoy can result in that pesky binge restrict cycle.
There Are Many Pasta Varieties
Pasta is available in all sizes, shapes, flavors, colors, and now all beans and legumes! Chickpea, lentil, black bean, edamame, the list goes on - all awesome pasta options - especially for those with special dietary requirements. BUT I ASK YOU THIS!!! WHY ARE YOU CHOOSING TO EAT THESE PASTA VARIETIES?
Is it because of an allergy or intolerance?
Is it because you are looking for that to be the source of protein in your meal?
Is it because you enjoy the taste and prefer it over other types of pasta?
Is it because that is what you had in your house and you needed a quick meal option?
If you are choosing these because diet culture has deemed them “healthier” versions of pasta with thoughts of intentional weight loss in mind - maybe you actually just want “real” pasta?? Think about it….
Say yes to foods you love!
Should I Eat This?
Yes, of course! Eat the pasta! Bow ties, spaghetti, lasagna, ravioli, however you prefer! All pastas deserve a chance to be put on our plate if that is what we want to eat!
You can have pasta alone, top it with sauce, pair it with protein, or add lots of cheese. If you want to get really chef-like, try making your own pasta!! Enjoy the classics like spaghetti and meatballs, pasta primavera, or baked ziti. The options with pasta are endless.
